Plum Creek in Maine
The Plum Creek Timber Company is one of the largest, private timberland owners in the United States. Headquartered in Seattle, Wash., our company owns nearly 8.2 million acres of timberlands in 18 different states and employs more than 2,200 people.
Plum Creek was established as a master limited partnership in 1989, when we purchased the holdings of Burlington Resources, a spin-off of Burlington Northern Railroad's non-railroad assets, which included mills and forestlands in Montana and elsewhere.
Today, our company operates as a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) and is traded on both the New York Stock Exchange and Pacific Stock Exchange under the trade symbol PCL. Plum Creek produces lumber, plywood, fiberboard and other forest products in 10 manufacturing facilities across the country.
All of our lands are certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and we pride ourselves on managing our forest resources in a balanced and socially responsible manner.
Plum Creek's presence in Maine began in 1998 when we purchased timberlands near Moosehead Lake from SAPPI (South African Pulp and Paper International). In 2005, we acquired more land just northeast and west of Greenville. Today, Plum Creek owns roughly 938,000 acres in Maine.
In September 1999, Plum Creek sold roughly 65 miles of prime waterfront along Moosehead and Flagstaff Lakes and the Kennebec River to the state of Maine.
