Plum Creek's environmental principles are among the toughest in the industry. Those principles include:

  • Sustainable Forest Management: We manage our forestlands in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. This type of proactive land stewardship is critical for protecting our economic resources. We became the first company to undertake an independent review and audit of our timberlands to ensure compatibility and compliance with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

  • Ecological Diversity: By using a variety of silvicultural techniques whenever possible, we strive to maintain a diversity of vegetation and unique growth areas, which support critical habitats for species, such as the endangered Canadian lynx and its primary prey, the snowshoe hare.

  • Water Quality: By employing best management practices, we strive for exceeding federal and state standards in both water and air quality in our forestlands. We accomplish this by including the retention of natural buffers along streams, lakes and other wetlands.

  • Soil Conservation: We maintain soil and site productivity by minimizing soil disturbances and by recycling harvest residues for enhancing soil nutrients.

  • Habitat Protection: We conserve fish and wildlife resources through judicious control of road access, timber harvest management and cooperation with state and federal fish and wildlife agencies.
